COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Christian men’s cross country and track and field runner Matthew Storer is the 2023-24 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Monday. Storer claims the award after a successful season on the cross country course and the track in which he claimed numerous RMAC and national honors. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native competed as a junior throughout the 2023-24 academic year and compiled a 3.71 grade-point average as a business administration major at Colorado Christian.
Storer opened his year with a bang during the 2023 cross country season and stamped a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country South Central Championship in Lubbock, Texas. He then advanced to the national stage and earned a third-place finish at the NCAA DII Men’s Cross Country Championship in Joplin, Mo., with a final time of 29:14.5 in the 10,000m race. His efforts at the cross country national championship earned him All-America honors and powered the Cougars to an eighth-place finish in the team standings.
He then entered the indoor track and field season and competed in five events for the Cougars, including the RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships and the NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Championships. At the RMAC Indoor Championships, he lifted the Cougars to a first-place finish in the distance medley relay event as CCU completed the race with a time of 10:06.17. He then captured a fifth-place finish in the 5,000-meter race at the NCAA DII Indoor Championships with a time of 13:57.00. Additionally, at the indoor national championships, he stamped an eighth-place finish in the 3,000m race with a personal-best time of 8:05.30.
To close out the 2023-24 academic year, he added in three meets for the outdoor track & field season, where he earned personal-best times in the 5,000m race with a 13:47.34 at the 2024 Bryan Clay Invitational (April 11-13) and a 29:38.27 for fifth place in the 10,000m competition at the 2024 NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 23-25). Storer also earned a 14th-place finish in the 5,000m race at the outdoor national championships.
Storer is no stranger to academic accomplishments and holds a long list of accolades that include RMAC All-Academic First Team and RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll. He has also earned multiple All-America nods throughout his cross country and track and field seasons while at Colorado Christian.
Storer will now be honored at the 2024 RMAC Hall of Fame Ceremony and Awards Banquet on Thursday, July 11, inside the Colorado Springs Marriott in Colorado Springs, Colo. Doors will open at 5 p.m. MT with the awards and induction ceremony to begin at 6 p.m.
