COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – No. 1 seed University of Colorado Colorado Springs scored three goals in the final 20 minutes, including two in a nine second span, to stun No. 2 seed Metropolitan State University of Denver in the RMAC Men's Soccer Championship final on Saturday at Mountain Lion Stadium.
The Mountain Lions won their first-ever RMAC Men's Soccer Tournament title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA DIvision II Men's Soccer Championship. The 40-team bracket wil be revealed during a selection show at 5 p.m. (MT), Monday, live-streamed on NCAA.com. The semifinals and finals will be played at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs.
MSU Denver (10-5-5) struck first, taking advantage of a giveaway deep in the UCCS end. Charlie Lucero picked up the ball and passed to Rhyson Johnston who hammered a shot into the net for a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. UCCS would put two shots on goal but could not solve MSU Denver's Nick McNeil in the opening frame which finished with the 1-0 Roadrunners lead.
The Roadrunners extended their lead in the 59th minute off a UCCS foul. On the ensuing free kick, Joey Kresnik's shot off the cross was deflected to the feet of Johnston who did not miss, putting the Roadrunners up 2-0.
UCCS (11-5-4) got into the match in the 72nd minute after MSU Denver fouled a shooter in the box. Jack Cook took the penalty kick and put it in the bottom right-hand corner to halve the Mountain Lions' defecit.
But the game turned on its head in the 87th minute. After Hugo Sjoberg made a diving save at one end, he quickly punted the ball forward. Cook gathered the ball at his feet, beat two MSU Denver defenders, and rifled a shot past the Roadrunners goalkeeper to tie the game.
On the ensuing kickof, MSU Denver turned the ball over on its side of midfield with Cole Warner deflecting the ball into Miles Seminario's path. He quickly sprinted and split a pair of Roadrunners defenders and put a shot toward the low right-hand corner past an onrushing Roadrunners goalkeeper for what proved the game-winning goal.
Cook finished with two goals on two shots and was named the RMAC Men's Soccer Tournament's "Most Valuable Player." Sjoberg made four saves on six shots on goal and was credited with an assist.
Johnston's two goals came on two shots as well. McNeil made three saves on six shots on goal
