COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico Highlands University sophomore guard Kapiolani Anitielu and Colorado Mesa University senior forward Olivia Reed Thyne are the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Women’s Basketball Players of the Week, presented by Genesee Nutrition.
Offensive
Kapiolani Anitielu, New Mexico Highlands (Sophomore, Guard, Farmington, New Mexico)
Anitielu was named the Tournament MVP at last weekend’s Great Western Shootout in Las Vegas, Nevada. Against Simon Fraser University, she scored a season-high of 24 points while adding four rebounds and an assist in a tightly contested 69-68 loss. Against Western Washington, Anitielu delivered a crucial assist in overtime to help the Cowgirls tie the game with less than two minutes remaining. New Mexico Highlands would go onto win 71-68, led by her 22-point, four-rebound, and three-assist performance.
Defensive
Olivia Reed Thyne, Colorado Mesa (Senior, Forward, Windsor, Colorado)
Reed Thyne led the Mavericks to a 2-0 week at the Nighthawk Classic at Northwest Nazarene University, closing out their final nonconference games with wins. Against Northwest Nazarene, she notched 14 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals. She followed that performance by scoring a season-high 37 points while adding 16 rebounds, two steals, and a block against Seattle Pacific University. Reed Thyne and the Mavericks moved to 13-1 on the season, and extended their winning streak to 10 games.
