COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa sophomore wrestler, Sophia Cornish, claims the Week 8 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Wrestler of the Week award, the league announced Tuesday.
Sophia Cornish, Colorado Mesa (Sophomore, 117 pounds, Mission Viejo, California)
Cornish delivered a dominant performance for the Mavericks, compiling a 4-1 record on the week while securing a second-place finish at the York Open and an undefeated showing in the tri-dual against Sioux Falls and Fort Hays State. At the York Open, Cornish opened the tournament with a 4-1 decision over teammate Isabella Morales before cruising past Missouri Valley’s Sarah Pineda with a 10-0 technical fall. She came up short against Grand View’s Mayangelie Colon in the championship bout, but responded the following day at the tri-duals. Cornish earned a forfeit win against Sioux Falls and capped the weekend by pinning Fort Hays State’s Leanna Landreth in 4:19. With her contributions, Colorado Mesa defeated Sioux Falls 37-10 and edged Fort Hays State 24-21.
